Samsung has already superseded its own inadequate ten-inch Galaxy tab with a brand new tablet that it thinner than the iPad 2. The company has also announced a tweener-sized 8.9-inch tablet.

Verifone adding NFC to all new POS hardw

Amplify’d from www.slashgear.com

Point-of-Sale (POS) hardware specialist Verifone has confirmed it will be integrating NFC support into all of its new terminals, a move that should dramatically speed the adoption of wireless payments. Describing the decision as a reaction to “merchant resistance,” CEO Douglas G Bergeron told NFC World that those retailers upgrading their POS hardware will find that they are automatically able to process NFC and contactless payments. However, he also cautions that throwing in an NFC chip won’t be sufficient to kill off traditional payment methods.

The 13-inch model comes with a dual-core i5 Intel processor. The quad-cord i7 processor is available on the 15-inch and 17-inch models.

The laptops have entirely new graphics processors, as well, ditching NVIDIA graphics for a combination of Intel's Sandy Bridge CPU and, on the larger models, AMD Radeon graphics processors. The AMD graphics chips take over in graphics-heavy programs such as games or applications that use high-definition video.

Nuclear Madness in Tripoli

Like we needed more proof

Amplify’d from www.nybooks.com

If any further proof is needed of Libyan strongman Muammar Qaddafi’s mental instability it is provided by WikiLeaks dispatches from US diplomats in Tripoli in November and December of 2009. At issue was some nearly loose nuclear material, a Russian plane, and a lone security guard—a footnote in the WikiLeaks scandal that many may have missed. But first, a little background.

Palm TouchPad leaked: 1.5 pounds, 13mm thick, and just moments from official

Amplify’d from www.engadget.com
According to PreCentral, Palm's forthcoming tablet -- which we suspect will be officially revealed in just a few hours -- will be dubbed TouchPad. They were able to sneak in and hear a few details during the event preparation session, enabling them to confirm that it'll weigh 1.5 pounds and measure 13mm thick (just as we'd heard). If those figures sound familiar, it's because a fledgling startup in Cupertino just so happens to have a slate that aligns exactly to those very specifications. Keep it locked right here for our impending liveblog -- we'll be bringing you the blow by blow as it goes down today in San Francisco.

Apple Takes Huge Steps towards a Graphics Pen for iPad

Amplify’d from www.patentlyapple.com
4 - Apple Stylus patent - stylus could include embedded accelerometer - 2011
Just yesterday the news broke about HP's new graphics tablet dubbed the Digital Sketch coming to market with a three-button stylus and today you'll read all about Apple's latest research and development in this same area. Last July Apple was granted a patent for a graphics tablet and since then several other specialty pen and display patents have come to light. Today's patent report covers a new stylus-friendly touch display designed to work with a new kind of stylus that works with a conductive disk and unique pivoting head. While the proposed pen system could be used with standard iPhone apps, the patent clearly points to the system being more graphics oriented as it mentions working with brush tools and the like. And lastly, the new pen even has a gaming angle to it that could be fun.

XBMC ported to A4-based Apple TV, iPad, iPhone 4, brings apps, 1080p

Amplify’d from www.appleinsider.com
The XBMC software, which already runs on the previous Mac OS X-based, Intel x86 Apple TV, has now been released to work on the ARM Architecture A4 chip used in the new iOS version, offering the ability to install apps and play content formats Apple doesn't natively support on its $99 box.

The new port makes Apple TV one of the cheapest devices that can run the XBMC platform (originally targeted at the first generation Xbox as "Xbox Media Center"), but it's not just cheap; it also appears to be quite powerful.

Avatar Blu-ray 3D Review

Very agreeable review

Many years from now, when the entire 3D-thing has sorted itself out and become mainstream (if it doesn't fall flat on its face and fail), people are going to look back and say that Avatar was the film that brought hope to the early adopters. I won't go out on a limb and say that it is the best looking home video of all-time, but it is the best looking 3D film without a doubt. The surround track is one of the best I've ever heard and it made me appreciate the system that I own. The current reigning box office champ is sadly only easily available to folks snapping up a 3D set from Panasonic, but I suppose that if one were really desperate for it, they could just buy the Ultimate Pack and ditch the glasses (as they won't work with a set from Samsung, Sony, or any other brand). My only real caveat about the Blu-ray 3D version is that it loses a lot of its impact on a small screen. If you can afford a 54" or larger 3D set or a 3D projector, you are going to want this very badly. A landmark product.

DVD-lovers, start your engines! On Monday, the developers of the free, open-source video transcoder HandBrake released an update that’s small in number change but large in feature additions.

HandBrake 0.9.5 adds presets for the iPhone 4, the iPad, and the second-generation Apple TV; allows editing of queued jobs; includes support for SSA subtitles; can now find the VLC media player (required for HandBrake to convert encrypted DVDs) in the user’s Application folder; supports the Blu-ray disc structure (but doesn’t decrypt Blu-ray discs); and more.
